Let's Continue the Conversation at Home from Sunday Morning about... Bibles
Reformation Sunday is "Hand out Bible Sunday." It used to be "Hand out Third Grade Bibles Sunday," but I'm getting a reputation. It was bound to happen.
On Reformation Sunday I seem to take on a Bible Glow and folks ask me for Bibles. Two years ago, it was a woman who needed a large print Bible, twice. Her home burned down, and she was devastated at the loss of her Bible. We gave her a Bible...twice. Last year, it was a middle-aged person who wanted a Bible...it led to them being part of our Christmas Pageant and attending Sunday School. We gave her a Bible. This year, I was in the grocery store. I stopped to get cupcakes to celebrate "Reformation Day-Hand out Bible Sunday," and the worker said they wanted a Bible to share stories with their grandchildren. I asked if she would still be there at 1:00 on my way home. Sure enough! Her eyes were glistening; her smile was warming; and her hug was affirming. We gave her a Bible.
I give out Bibles, on behalf of a congregation, on Reformation Sunday to fulfill their baptismal promises to tell the stories of faith and to teach folks how to live as a follower of Jesus Christ. In the process we are reformed by learning what "we" look like. We are third graders who can now read for understanding. We are community members whose house burns and needs a new Bible. We are a fifth grader who missed out during the pandemic. We are a hard working matriarch who hand down stories of faith, hope, and unconditional love to grandchildren. Like I said, I'm getting a reputation as the "Bible Lady." I'm okay with that.. It was bound to happen.
